Pass Plus

Pass Plus is an optional scheme set up by the DSA to help young drivers who have just passed their driving tests to gain more experience and confidence. The Pass Plus course is a practical training course, which teaches new skills and techniques and helps new drivers gain experience of a range of different driving situations. Because of this, drivers who hold the Pass Plus qualification are often able to get reduced price car insurance.

Pass Plus Course

The Pass Plus course takes around 6 hours, and must be carried out with a Pass Plus registered ADI driving instructor.

The course covers the following six modules:

  • town driving
  • all weather driving
  • rural driving
  • night driving
  • dual carriageways
  • motorways

Unlike the main driving test there is no separate exam – once you have finished the training course to your instructor’s satisfaction you will be presented with your Pass Plus certificate.

If it is not possible to arrange a practical session that covers a specific module (eg rural driving) you will still be able to study the topic and pass based on the theoretical knowledge you have learned to help you better cope with those driving conditions in the future.

Apart from the obvious benefits from being a safer, more confident driver, one of the main other benefits is the possibility of reduced car insurance premiums. A number of major insurers recognise the Pass Plus certification and offer discounted insurance to people who take the Pass Plus course soon after their driving test – including AA, Norwich Union, Direct Line and Endsleigh insurance companies.
